Different neuronal groups govern right-left alternation when walking

June 30, 2013 ? Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified the neuronal circuits in the spinal cord of mice that control the ability to produce the alternating movements of the legs during walking. The study, published in the journal Nature, demonstrates that two genetically-defined groups of nerve cells are in control of limb alternation at different speeds of locomotion, and thus that the animals' gait is disturbed when these cell populations are missing.

Most land animals can walk or run by alternating their left and right legs in different coordinated patterns. Some animals, such as rabbits, move both leg pairs simultaneously to obtain a hopping motion. In the present study, the researchers Adolfo Talpalar and Julien Bouvier together with professor Ole Kiehn and colleagues, have studied the spinal networks that control these movement patterns in mice. By using advanced genetic methods that allow the elimination of discrete groups of neurons from the spinal cord, they were able to remove a type of neurons characterized by the expression of the gene Dbx1.

"It was classically thought that only one group of nerve cells controls left right alternation," says Ole Kiehn who leads the laboratory behind the study at the Department of Neuroscience. "It was then very interesting to find that there are actually two specific neuronal populations involved, and on top of that that they each control different aspect of the limb coordination."

Indeed, the researchers found that the gene Dbx1 is expressed in two different groups of nerve cells, one of which is inhibitory and one that is excitatory. The new study shows that the two cellular populations control different forms of the behaviour. Just like when we change gear to accelerate in a car, one part of the neuronal circuit controls the mouse's alternating gait at low speeds, while the other population is engaged when the animal moves faster. Accordingly, the study also show that when the two populations are removed altogether in the same animal, the mice were unable to alternate at all, and hopped like rabbits instead.

There are some animals, such as desert mice and kangaroos, which only hop. The researchers behind the study speculate that the locomotive pattern of these animals could be attributable to the lack of the Dbx1 controlled alternating system.

Why Oracle And Salesforce, Once Bitter Rivals, Are Now On Cloud Nine

cloudbuddies1280Marc Benioff and Larry Ellison, the CEOs of two of the more powerful enterprise companies in the world -- Salesforce.com and Oracle -- are not known to be the chummiest of execs. Before this week's sudden truce -- which will see the two companies integrate their cloud services -- the only clouds that connected the two were dark and foreboding ones, as the two pitted themselves and their companies against each other in brinkmanship-style competition, chasing similar acquisitions and similar strategies to stay within sight of each other.

Press TV should take legal action against Intelsat: Intl. lawyer

Press TV should take legal action against Intelsat

An international lawyer says the English-language news channel, Press TV, should take legal action against the communications satellite services provider, Intelsat, over its latest decision to take Iranian channels off the air.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Wednesday, Paul Wolf stated that the Tehran-based news channel reserves the right to free speech, and the recent move by the Luxembourg-based company to suspend its services to Iranian television channels is a clear example of censorship.
He further noted that Press TV should take the case to a court and sue Intelsat over its measure to cease the signal of a news channel that has millions of viewers.
Wolf added that Press TV must explore all available means to win the case and expressed hope that the channel would receive massive support in the case.
On June 19, Intelsat announced its decision to stop the services to Iranian channels including Press TV, citing the illegal sanctions against the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) as pretext.
Intelsat said that it has been ordered by the US government to avoid extending IRIB?s license, noting that it will stop providing services as of July 1.

Where should Snowden go? His dad, Russia, and Ecuador all weigh in.

Edward Snowden's father told NBC his son might return to the US if conditions were met.

A transit passenger takes a photo with a mobile phone in the transit zone at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow Wednesday, June 26. For almost a week now, former NSA contractor turned leaker Edward Snowden has been thought to be stowed away somewhere in Sheremetyevo airport, after having fled Hong Kong last week.

In an interview with NBC, Lonnie Snowden expressed hopes that his son would return to the US, provided that the Justice Department plays ball. Meanwhile, Ecuador has unilaterally renounced trade agreements with the US in defiance of demands that the small South American country not accept Mr. Snowden, and Russia?s Federation Council has invited him to testify as to the extent of NSA spying on Russian citizens.?

For almost a week now, Snowden has been thought to be stowed away somewhere in Moscow?s Sheremetyevo airport, after having fled Hong Kong last week. Snowden is wanted by the US on charges of espionage and attempts to have him extradited have failed so far.

Snowden?s father appeared in an interview on NBC?s ?Today Show? this morning, claiming that he believes his son would willingly return to the US if certain conditions were met, reports the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Those conditions include allowing Snowden to choose the trial location, not subjecting him to a gag order, and not detaining him pre-trial.

In an effort to have these conditions met, Snowden?s father has written a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder to convey these conditions and his hopes that they would provide incentive for Snowden to return, writes the New York Daily News.

Snowden Sr., who has not spoken to his son since April, also took the opportunity to?defend his son?s honor, reports Reuters:

"I love him. I would like to have the opportunity to communicate with him. I don't want to put him in peril," he said in the interview.

Snowden said he did not think his son had committed treason, even though his son broke US laws in releasing details about the federal monitoring programs.

"He has betrayed his government, but I don't believe that he's betrayed the people of the United States," he said.

The Russian option

In Russia, the Federation Council ? the Duma?s upper house ? has set up a special committee to investigate aspects of the NSA?s spying activities in Russia, and has invited Snowden to testify before them. As The Christian Science Monitor reports, the committee would like Snowden to inform it of the extent to which large Internet companies such as Google and Facebook are involved.

"We don't want to get involved in secret service conspiracies. Whatever the NSA was doing is not particularly our concern," [Sen. Ruslan] Gattarov [head of the committee] says.

At the same time, the Snowden issue has caused US relations with Ecuador to deteriorate. Snowden is currently applying for asylum in Ecuador, a decision that could take up to two months, according to The Christian Science Monitor. In response, there have been calls in the US to cut off aid to Ecuador.

Ecuador, it seems, has not taken those threats lightly, and has unilaterally broken off a preferential trade agreement with the US in order to prevent ?blackmail? over the asylum request, reports CNN:

"In the face of threats, insolence, and arrogance of certain US sectors, which have pressured to remove the preferential tariffs because of the Snowden case, Ecuador tells the world we unilaterally and irrevocably renounce the preferential tariffs," President Rafael Correa said Thursday, reiterating comments other officials from his government made earlier in the day.

But Mr. Correa, who has a history of thumbing his nose at the US, also noted that despite its support for Snowden, Ecuador cannot come to a decision on his asylum request, as he is not on Ecuadorian territory, according to Al Jazeera. "You request asylum when you are on a country's territory. Snowden is not on Ecuadorean territory, so technically we cannot even process the asylum request," Correa said.

Your guide to making better decisions - Business Management Daily

tough decisions ahead signA leader?s most important job is making good decisions.

Step back and improve yours:

  • Consider several options. By considering only one job candidate, you rationalize away the negatives because you want it to work out. By laying out various possibilities, you see a bigger picture.
  • Think objectively. For personal decisions, ask: ?What would I tell my best friend to do?? For business decisions, ask: ?If I were replaced tomorrow and a wise person took my place, what would he or she do??
  • Be fair. With so much data available, it?s easy to make a case for your gut feeling. Build opposition into your decision-making. In a high-stakes situation, assign a team preparing the case to do something and a team preparing the case not to.
  • Curb your enthusiasm. Leaders tend to be overconfident, so use a ?premortem,? in which you ask your people, ?OK, we just made a decision. Let?s pretend it?s a year from now and it turned into a disaster. What happened??

Eminem in 2010

Rapper Eminem admits in a new documentary that his abuse of prescription drugs almost killed him. "My bottom was going to be death," the rapper said in an interview in "How to Make Money Selling Drugs," a 2013 documentary.

(Warning: The film excerpt is expletive-filled.)

The musician talks about how his first Vicodin was a revelation for him since it made him feel "mellow" and also took away his pain.

Friends tried to warn him that he was in trouble, Eminem said, but he pushed them away since he didn't view prescription drug abuse as the same as using crack or heroin.

?I would say, ?Get that (expletive) person outta here,? ? he said in the film. ?I can?t believe they said that (expletive) to me. ... I literally thought I could control (my drug problem)."

Soon the specific drugs didn't matter. "You're taking things that people are giving you that you don't even know what the (expletive) they are," Eminem said. "Xanax, Valium, tomato, to-mah-to."

The drugs caught up to the rapper and he had to be hospitalized. "Had I got to the hospital about two hours later, I would have died," he recalls in the film. "My organs were shutting down. My liver, kidneys, everything. They were gonna have to put me on dialysis, they didn?t think I was gonna make it. My bottom was gonna be death."

After leaving the hospital, Eminem relapsed within a month. "I remember just walking around my house and thinking every single day, like, I'm gonna (expletive) die." The rapper said he didn't sleep for three weeks, "not even for an (expletive) minute," and had to regain the ability to walk and speak.

"I just couldn?t believe that anybody could be naturally happy or naturally function or be just enjoying life in general without being on something," he said. "So I would say to anybody, ?It does get better.'"

"Entourage" star Adrian Grenier is one of the producers of the film, which includes interviews with Susan Sarandon and Woody Harrelson.

Caspian Sea gas pipeline to go through Greece

(AP) ? BP, the main developer of the huge Shah Deniz gas field in the Caspian Sea, confirmed on Friday that the pipeline to Europe will go through Greece and then under the sea into Italy.

Regional BP president Gordon Birell said at an official ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, that the project was awarded to the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, or TAP. The other option, the Nabucco West venture, would have run across Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria.

TAP is comprised of Norway's Statoil, Axpo of Switzerland and the German firm E.ON. Its pipeline will run nearly 800 kilometers (500 miles) across northern Greece and into southern Albania before traveling under sea to Italy.

BP holds 25.5 percent of the Shah Deniz project, while Statoil holds another 25.5 percent. Azerbaijan's state oil and gas company, Socar, holds 10 percent, as do Russia's Lukoil, Iran's Nico and France's Total. The remaining 9 percent is held by Trao.

Birell said the consortium spent two years determining the best route for the pipeline that will carry Azerbaijan's first gas to Europe. The gas from Shah Deniz's second stage is to go into production in 2018, with the first supplies to be transported to Europe in 2019. Birell said 10 billion cubic meters of gas will be exported annually.

The choice of TAP was expected after Austrian power utility OMV said Wednesday that the Nabucco venture it was backing had not been selected.

Socar president Rovnaq Abdullayev said at Friday's ceremony that Azerbaijan and the European Union are still discussing other possible routes for an additional pipeline to carry Azerbaijan's considerable gas supplies to Europe. The Shah Deniz reserves are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters.

The European Union and the United States both enthusiastically support building connections to Azerbaijan's gas as a way to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

Stocks regain ground after biggest drop of the year

Stocks finished the week with an advance Friday after a two-day plunge, suggesting that perhaps Wall Street will be successfully weaned from the Federal Reserve's easy money after all. That money has helped push stocks upward over the past four years.

After a two-day plunge, stocks ended the week with an advance on Friday, suggesting that?Wall?Street?may be successfully weaned from the Federal Reserve's easy money after all.

"Saner heads are prevailing," said Jim Dunigan, chief investment officer at PNC Wealth Management. "People are looking a little deeper into the message from the Fed ? the economy is getting better," he said. "At the end of the day that's a positive."

Investors had known that sooner or later the Fed would quit spending $85 billion per month pumping money into the U.S. economy.

That money has been a big driver behind the stock market's bull run the last four years. It led to low interest rates that encouraged borrowing for everything from factory machinery to commercial airplanes to home renovations. Has the economy been great? No. Unemployment is still high and U.S. growth has been anemic. But it could have been worse. Investors were confident enough in a growing economy that the Standard & Poor's 500 index hit an all-time high of 1,669 on May 21.

Then on Wednesday, the Fed said it would aim to turn off that spigot by the middle of next year as long as the economy is strong enough.

Just because investors knew it was coming didn't mean they liked it. The Dow dropped 560 points on Wednesday and Thursday.

Investors recovered their mojo on Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 41.08 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 14,799.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 4.24 points, or 0.3 percent to close at 1,592.43.

The gains were led by the kinds of stocks that investors favor when they want to play it safe. Makers of consumer staples, utilities, and health care companies rose the most of the 10 industries in the S&P 500 index. The only two categories that fell were technology stocks and companies that make basic materials.

Friday's gain wasn't enough to erase the market's loss for the week. The S&P 500 fell 2.1 percent for the week, and the Dow was down 1.8 percent. Stocks have now fallen two weeks in a row, and four of the past five.

The real question will be whether the sell-off continues next week, said Frank Fantozzi, CEO of Planned Financial Services. So far, the market's swoon this week appears to be more of an adjustment than the beginning of a long-term rout. "If the flow out of equities starts to increase, this might be the pullback we've been waiting for," he said.

Many investors have been predicting some kind of pullback in the market following its nearly unbroken advance since last fall. The S&P 500 index rose for seven straight months through May. So far in June it's down 2.1 percent.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note hit 2.54 percent, up from 2.42 percent late Thursday. It has risen sharply since Wednesday as investors sold bonds in anticipation that the Fed would slow, and eventually end, its bond purchases, if the U.S. recovery continues.

The yield, which is a benchmark for interest rates on many kinds of loans including home mortgages, was as low as 1.63 percent as recently as May 3.

Technology shares lagged the market after business software maker Oracle reported flat revenue late Thursday, even though analysts expected an increase. Oracle plunged $3.07, or 9 percent, to $30.14, the biggest drop in the S&P 500 index. Oracle is struggling to adapt as customers shift away from software installed on their own computers toward software that runs remotely.

The Nasdaq composite index, which is heavily weighted with technology stocks, fell 7.39 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,357.25. Apple, the biggest stock in the index, fell $3.34, or 0.8 percent, to $413.50. Microsoft fell 23 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $33.27.

The price of gold recovered after plunging the day before. Gold rose $5.80, or 0.5 percent, to $1,292 an ounce. Crude oil fell $1.45, or 1.5 percent, to $93.69 a barrel in New York.

The dollar rose against other currencies as traders anticipated that U.S. interest rates would rise as the Fed winds down its bond purchases.

Among other stocks making big moves:

?Darden Restaurants, which runs Olive Garden and Red Lobster, fell $1.11, or 2 percent, to $50.12 after rising expenses hurt its fourth-quarter earnings.

? Spreadtrum Communications jumped $3.62, or 16 percent, to $25.91 after the Chinese smartphone chip maker said its board is considering a buyout offer valued at about $1.39 billion from Tsinghua Holdings.

? Facebook rose 63 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $24.53 after saying it will add video to its popular photo-sharing app Instagram, following on the heels of Twitter's growing video-sharing app, Vine.

A Fed policy statement and comments from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke started the selling in stocks, bonds and commodities Wednesday. Bernanke said the Fed expects to scale back its bond-buying program later this year and end it by mid-2014 if the economy continues to improve. The bank has been buying Treasury and mortgage bonds, which has made borrowing cheap for consumers and businesses. The program has also encouraged investors to buy stocks instead of bonds.

The S&P 500 is still up 11.7 percent, for the year, not far from its full-year increase of 13.4 percent last year.

Fire threatens Colorado mountain town of 400

DEL NORTE, Colo. (AP) ? A massive wildfire threatened a tourist town in Colorado's southwestern mountains on Friday, forcing its roughly 400 residents to flee ahead of the fast-burning blaze fueled by hot, windy weather.

Wildland firefighters teamed up with local firefighters to try to protect South Fork, which is surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest. State authorities said the 47-square-mile fire was a few miles southwest of town Friday night and had been advancing at a rate of about a mile an hour. Thick smoke was limiting visibility.

Fire spokeswoman Penny Bertram wouldn't speculate on the likelihood of the town burning. There's a high probability of the fire reaching the town if the fire continues to behave as it has, she said, though more than 30 fire engines were assigned to protect it.

"They're hedging their bets," Bertram said.

An air tanker was also able to drop slurry ahead of the fire to try to slow its growth and to give firefighters a chance to dig a fire break, Bertram said.

"Every type of structure protection is in place," Jim Jaminet, fire management officer for the national forest, told about two dozen evacuees who gathered at Del Norte High School on Friday night.

The town is a popular spot for hiking and camping. The fictional Griswold family camped in South Fork in 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation." The famous scene where a dog urinates on a picnic basket was filmed at South Fork's Riverbend Resort, called "Kamp Komfort" in the movie.

South Fork's mayor, Kenneth Brooke, sent his children and grandchildren to a safe location and stayed behind, helping several dozen area fire responders prepare for hosing down structures.

Brooke said authorities are allowing him to stay in South Fork until the blaze crests a nearby mountain. Until then, the mayor was taking phone calls from nervous neighbors and telling them the town's grim forecast.

"I just tell them it doesn't look good," Brooke told The Associated Press by phone Friday. "I tell them the truth, that the fire is coming. I just tell them to keep themselves safe, evacuate as need be and don't come back.

"We're just watching the fire and doing what we can for people's properties, but mostly it's just waiting. Right now I'm saying, 'Stay out.'"

Late June to August is usually peak season for South Fork, when tourists or part-time residents multiply the town's population.

Harold Josefy, his wife and their 13-year-old granddaughter left the Fun Valley RV park after officers knocked on doors Friday. "They told us we had to get out now," he said.

But Terri Allahdadi and her motor coach were staying in South Fork for now. "It's like a ghost town," Allahdadi said by telephone Friday night. "We are not having trouble breathing. I know they need to evacuate people, but I don't feel threatened at all."

South Fork native Denny Fleming, 55, said he, his wife and his dad were the only residents he knew who stayed behind. His family runs South Fork's only gas station. They were keeping it open so firefighters would have fuel, coffee and ice, he said. The family's Rainbow Grocery was closed though.

"We're usually very, very busy right now," Fleming said.

Bertram said the hot, dry and windy weather along with large stands of beetle-killed trees are causing extreme fire behavior. While most fires actively burn four hours a day, this one is burning for 12 hours a day, helping it to mushroom in recent days.

Firefighters have largely let the lightning-sparked fire burn because it's too hot and erratic to fight on the ground. Water and slurry drops from air tankers also haven't been effective, with pilots reporting that their drops largely evaporated before hitting the ground.

"There's no stopping it," Bertram said.

The town was incorporated in 1992, making it Colorado's youngest municipality. The town lost 11 structures in the 2002 Million Fire, which charred more than 14 square miles.

South Fork residents are used to damaging wildfires, but this year's is shaping up to be the worst, Brooke said.

"Our tourists are what support the town. The fires are going to run everybody away. So that's going to hurt," he said.

It was among several fires burning in Colorado.

In south-central Colorado, nine structures and four outbuildings have been lost in a wildfire in Huerfano County that has evacuated homes of about two dozen residents and more than 170 Boy Scouts since it started Wednesday, fire officials said. Gov. John Hickenlooper on Friday authorized $3 million to help with costs.

Hickenlooper also authorized $50,000 for a fire in Rocky Mountain National Park and extended funding for final expenses from fires in 2011 and 2012.

On Thursday, firefighters fully contained what is now the state's most destructive wildfire. The Black Forest Fire destroyed more than 500 homes and killed two people near Colorado Springs.

(AP) ? A federal bankruptcy judge signed off on a sealed agreement that resulted in "Mr. Las Vegas" Wayne Newton moving from his sprawling "Casa de Shenandoah" property after 45 years.

Newton family members and attorneys weren't in court Friday while U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Bruce Markell accepted the plan submitted by lawyers for new property owner CSD LLC.

Landowner Lacy Harber says he still plans to open a tourist attraction on the 40-acre estate that Newton named "Casa de Shenandoah."

Harber isn't saying whether the Newtons will be involved.

Harber bought the property in June 2010 for $19.5 million with plans to open a "Graceland West" attraction commemorating the "Danke Schoen" crooner's show biz career.

Newton, his family and their menagerie of exotic animals moved this month to another nearby property.

Greene Uses Facebook Albums as Wanted Flyers

Facebook is not just for keeping in touch with friends and family, sharing pictures, and status updates. Now it's a tool for catching wanted people.?

The Greene County Sheriff's Office is using the social media site to track down crime suspects. Sheriff's deputies are posting pictures of wanted people on Facebook and they are getting more tips than ever.

"We will post on Facebook to cast a larger net, especially with if there are suspects that could be outside of our jurisdiction," said Michael Martin, sheriff's deputy. He says since the sheriff's office started online it has made more arrests leading to convictions.?

The sheriff's office Facebook page has more than 900 likes, and even more people?are looking at the pictures. ?On April 28, the office posted a "People of Interest" album. Nineteen people shared it with their followers, meaning thousands could have seen the pictures.

"We found the results to be extraordinary," Martin said.?

Reporting a tip is always confidential. You can message, email, call or text the sheriff's office.?

Facebook has also been successful because of its real-time capabilities. Rather than somebody seeing a flyer on a wall days or weeks after an event, they will come across pictures faster - maybe even that exact hour or day - on Facebook.
