A dozen York College field hockey players have been honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
The players were named members of the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad on Tuesday.
The honored Spartans were headlined by four-time honoree Danielle Gaitings. The senior captain boasts an overall grade-point average of 3.92 in elementary and special education. The academic award caps a year in which she was also honored as a first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference selection at defender.
Joining Gaitings on the academic squad were fellow All-CAC honorees Ashton Burk (a Susquehannock High School graduate) and Kailey Brewer. Burk is a senior midfielder and Brewer a junior forward.
The remaining members of the Spartans who earned the academic accolades include sophomore Brittany Alvarado, senior Jessica Esteves, sophomore Leah Hunsinger, freshman Julia King, sophomore captain Alyssa Martin, freshman Holly Martin (a South Western grad), sophomore Katie Petrillo, sophomore Nancy Saylor and junior Madi Wilt.
The individual award recognizes field hockey student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
The Spartans also earned a spot on the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
OTHER YORK COLLEGE NOTES
BASEBALL TEAM PLAGUED BY ERRORS: The York College baseball team opened its 2013 spring trip with a disappointing 12-4 setback to Catholic University in a non-conference contest at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Tuesday.
The Spartans fell to 2-2, while Cardinals improved to 6-2. York was hurt by five errors, leading to seven unearned runs. The Spartans have now made 12 errors in four games, leading to 12 unearned runs.
Sophomore Dan Gurganus absorbed the loss. The right-hander allowed nine runs, five earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4? innings of work. He also hit three batters.
Jimmy King, Derek Pitzer and Justin Cohen each had a pair of hits and an RBI for York, while sophomore J.J. Oleniacz also had a pair of hits in his first start for the Spartans. Pitzer is a Dallastown High School graduate.
York outhit the Cardinals 15-12 and stranded 13 runners in the game.
SPARTANS FALL IN MEN'S TENNIS: The York College men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Eastern Nazarene in its second match of its 2013 Hilton Head spring trip on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans have lost two straight and dropped to 5-3 for the season. Eastern Nazarene improved to 2-1.
York managed singles wins from Nathaniel Hoskins, Matt Rosenkratz and Daniel Erk. Hoskins recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles while Rosenkratz was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at No. 4 singles. Erk improved to 6-1 overall by earning 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
SOFTBALL TEAM LOSES PAIR: The York College softball team finished the second day of its spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., at 0-2.
The Spartans fell to Eastern 5-1 and came up short against King's 4-2. The Spartans fell to 1-7. Payton Hill paced the Spartans in the opener with one hit and one RBI. In the second game, Jena Ruby finished 3-for-3 with one run to pace the Spartans. Sara Thacker was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Kayleen Bell, Aryn Johnston and Sara Harris each finished 2-for-4.
