NBC to Install End Zone Bullet Time Rigs for 360? Replays this Football Season

NBC to Install End Zone Bullet Time Rigs for 360? Replays this Football Season football1

Sunday Night Football is about to get a lot more fun to watch. Not even two months after we shared the news that the folks over at NHK had put together a robotic bullet time rig that could shoot 360? slow-motion replays, NBC has announced its plan to bring matrix-style replays to the world of pro football.

There?s no indication that the two ideas are related, but the concept is similar: give sports fans a roundabout view of the action. For NBC, this means that Sunday Night Football will now feature two 24-camera bullet time rigs ? one in each end zone.

NBC to Install End Zone Bullet Time Rigs for 360? Replays this Football Season bullettimesystem1

The rig developed by NHK used only 8 cameras. NBC is planning to install 24 in each end zone.

In addition to the new perspective that NBC is hoping to offer ? not to mention the fact that referees will now have zero excuses when they botch a challenge ? installing the tech is one of several ways NBC?s Cris Collinsworth said Sunday Night Football is ?trying to be a show that really appeals to everybody.?

The tech will go into effect right from week-one at the Giants/Cowboys game in Dallas on September 8th. As television?s highest-rated and most-watched show, Sunday Night Football is under more pressure than most to stay on the cutting edge. And when the cutting edge involves installing 48 extra cameras at every Sunday night game, well, we certainly won?t complain if you don?t.

Town crier's royal birth cameo confuses US journos

(AP) ? Well-wishers waiting outside St. Mary's Hospital in London might have been forgiven for thinking a town crier announcing the birth of the Prince of Cambridge had the royal seal of approval.

Bell in one hand, scroll in the other, Tony Appleton marked Monday's royal birth by belting out an old-timey proclamation which began "Oyez, Oyez" and announced the arrival of "the first born of their royal highness, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."

Appleton is in fact a crier, but in Romford, a commuter town just east of London, and in Bury St. Edmunds, a market town in southeastern England ? not Buckingham Palace. In interview, he said Wednesday that he simply showed up in costume after getting a tipoff from a British journalist that the Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Prince William's wife Kate, had given birth.

"I'm a royalist. I love the royal family," he said by telephone from Romford, but he acknowledged he had no official royal role. "I came unannounced."

That didn't stop him from playing a bizarre cameo role on leading U.S. newscasts in the media frenzy surrounding the baby's birth, nor did it prevent confused American journalists from identifying him as a bona fide mouthpiece for Buckingham Palace.

"The royal crier delivering the royal news," was how CNN's Anderson Cooper described the scene. On Fox News, Stuart Varney told viewers that Appleton was "the town crier making the official announcement in a very loud voice, all in his full regalia."

Another one who misidentified Appleton's role was MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who issued a tongue-in-cheek correction on Tuesday.

"Hear Ye, Hear Ye ... Ye Old Department of Corrections shall herewith be presented," she told viewers. "We identified this man as the official town crier of London. Upon further review we now have the full story. His name is Tony Appleton. He is a town crier, but he is a town crier in ... the town of Romford and Bury St. Edmunds. But he is not the official town crier of London, which is what I said."

Buckingham Palace did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Appleton is a man of many talents. In addition to his town crier duties ? which include leading parades and appearing at openings ? he works as a toastmaster, a kind of master of ceremonies, at weddings, birthdays, and bar mitzvahs. He also owns a small nursing home in Romford.

Pan-Kurdish congress planned to unify ranks amid regional turmoil

ARBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Kurds from Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria have agreed to convene a pan-Kurdish congress to tackle historical divisions and position themselves to take full advantage of regional upheaval.

Often described as the world's largest ethnic group without a state of their own, Kurds regard the modern borders that have carved up their homeland of "Greater Kurdistan" as a historical injustice.

Geopolitics may have condemned the Kurds to live in four different countries, but their own competing ideologies and partisan rivalries have also got in the way of greater unity, and even led to armed conflict.

Representatives of 39 Kurdish parties attended a symbolic meeting in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region on Monday, though any joint initiatives, let alone the political or institutional unity that some dream of, are still a long way off.

No date for the conference has yet been set, but some participants said it could be held as early as next month.

"Our main goal in holding this congress is for all Kurdish political factions to reach a shared strategy and voice," Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said in a speech, describing the meeting in Arbil as "historic".

"I call on all participants to work together in a spirit of brotherliness and patriotism, far from any narrow political ideologies."

Successive governments in Baghdad, Damascus, Tehran and Ankara have long exploited disunity among the Kurds to thwart their aspirations for more independence or a unified homeland, and at times resorted to brute force to suppress them. Thousands were gassed to death by the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Ramzy Mardini of Beirut's Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies said divisions still posed a challenge: "Competition amongst the Kurds is leading to contradictory policies, which inhibit their ability to position themselves as winners of the Arab Spring."

Nonetheless, ethnic Kurds who fought out their partisan rivalries in the 1990s now run their own quasi-state in northern Iraq, and are enjoying unprecedented prosperity while sectarian violence threatens to rip the rest of the country apart.

In Syria, civil war has provided an opening for greater autonomy for the Kurds after years of oppression under President Bashar al-Assad and his father before him, who denied thousands citizenship and confiscated their lands.

In Turkey, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is currently in talks to end a three-decade armed rebellion in return for greater rights for the Kurds, who make up around one fifth of Turkey's population.

Only in Iran have Kurds' fortunes remained little changed.

"There is no doubt that the Kurds see the historical upheavals plaguing the region through the lens of opportunism," Mardini said. "It is by way of an unraveling of the political order that national borders could eventually be redrawn. The Kurds are trying to best position themselves for that moment."

You can connect with Curt and Big Boi?s BBQ on Facebook

Here?s his story

The birth of Big Boi?s BBQ started when I was 8 years old and I was told by my momma, ?if you?re hungry, you need to learn how to cook.? Momma believed in tough love and from that day I began to make and cook pancakes from scratch. From mixing eggs, milk, flour, sugar and melted butter, my desire to cook slowly grew. Years -and many failed meals- later, I was again pushed to the forefront when my buddies in the military asked if I would help with Thanksgiving dinner. Five adult soldiers of which only 2 of us could cook (sorta) made a go of it, I was responsible for the smoked turkey, collard greens, dressing, giblet gravy and my momma?s Smokin? Jo?s sweet potato pie.

Needless to say, with the help of my friends, we successfully completed Thanksgiving Dinner and from that point, the FIRE WAS RELIT. Soon after I started ?experimenting? with bbq, and the 1st version of my bbq sauce was ?NO BUENO??.? I mean, I read the instructions and followed them to the letter and after I finished the cooking process, it was absolutely horrible. I honestly don?t think that the cats around my apartment complex ever came back. NOTE TO SELF: ?Maybe I might have another invention for animal control??.? Getting back to the story, it wasn?t until the late ninetie?s when I finally stumbled upon the initial recipe for Big Boi?s BBQ sauce. This came about from using whatever I had in the cabinets at the time and adding a secret ingredient, a cold beer?. Ah yes, the cold beer: every backyard and front kitchen cook?s secret ingredient. My only problem is that I never left enough in the bottle to actually put in the sauce.

After a few events at the house and having those who partook in the festivities compliment me on the sauce, I thought, ?maybe I might have something.? But then again, we were in the ?spirit? at that time. Needless to say, I persevered and burned hundreds of dollars of meat and destroyed a few grills along the way but the passion STILL BURNED.

I moved to the great state of North Carolina where mustard sauce is king and I started selling my tomato based sauce out the back of my car in mason jars for $5 each. I sold dozens at a time and couldn?t keep up with the demand.

In 2001 and I moved back home to Florida where good bbq is tough to find and even harder to maintain. I came back at a time when there were several good weekend guys who had their own following but I was determined to start my own francise and become the best in the city.

During my initial 3 months my food was so horrible, ?I couldn?t give it away,? burnt and dry. I had to borrow my uncle?s grill and I could only cook a case of ribs at a time but I was still determined. I convinced my Pops to help me build my own grill. Her name was Bertha. She looked like a coffin but could cook 3 cases of ribs and 1 case of whole chickens in 3 hours to absolute perfection. Cooking in front of my parent?s house I developed my own following where the UPS guy, FedEx driver, and local policemen were my regulars. They would even drive by and place their order for pickup, they yell, ?Hey Big Boi, fix me up some of your fine BBQ.? There in my parent?s front yard, I decided on the name Big Boi?s BBQ. Soon after I began competing in BBQ competitions and actually placed 3rd, my first time out.

Now it?s been a little over 10 years since that time and the fire and passion for great bbq is greater than ever, so we are taking it global. I?ve perfected my rubs, sauce, and cooking techniques now you can benefit from years of toll and success. It?s time for you to GET YOUR BBQ ON!

Stock futures pare gains to trade flat after McDonald's earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures pared gains to trade flat on Monday, pressured by a decline in McDonald's shares after its results and as investors booked profits after the S&P 500 index hit yet another closing high on Friday.

McDonald's Corp (MCD) earnings came in a busy week of reports, with about one-third of S&P 500 companies due to report, including Apple (AAPL.O) and entertainment provider Netflix Inc (NFLX).

McDonald's Corp reported a 4 percent rise in quarterly profit, while global sales at established restaurants were in line with analysts' expectations. Shares fell 2 percent to $97.75 in premarket trade.

U.S.-listed shares of UBS (UBS.N) (UBSN.VX) rose 3.3 percent in premarket trade after the Swiss bank said its second-quarter profit beat forecasts despite a $920 million charge to settle a U.S. lawsuit and other matters.

The S&P 500 index (^GSPC) on Friday edged up to end at a second straight record high, while the Dow and Nasdaq stock gauges fell as disappointing earnings results from Microsoft and Google dragged on the market. Stronger-than-expected results from General Electric Co (GE.N) and oilfield services company Schlumberger NV (SLB.N) helped the S&P 500 to offset the tech losses and post a fourth week of gains.

"Considering the rally we've had recently, we are probably likely to move sideways or consolidate gains for a day or two, before moving up higher as earnings season intensifies. Nevertheless, the summer rally continues," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

In economic news, June existing-home sales data is due at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT). For home sales, a Reuters survey of economists expect a reading of an annualized 5.25 million units, compared with a prior reading of 5.18 million.

Kimberly-Clark Corp (KMB.N), best known for its Kleenex tissues, posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Monday, as cost savings helped offset the negative impact of foreign exchange rates.

Halliburton Co (HAL), the world's second-largest oilfield services company, posted higher-than-expected quarterly profit as it made more headway outside its home U.S. market. The stock was up 0.4 percent in premarket trade.

Analysts' estimates for corporate earnings have been reduced so much that investors believe the targets for the most part should be easily beaten.

Through Friday, of the 104 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings for the quarter, 65.4 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations, while 51 percent have topped revenue estimates, according to Thomson Reuters data.

S&P 500 futures fell 0.4 point and were in line with fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 8 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 5 points.

In Europe, shares were broadly unchanged by midday trade as mixed company earnings halted the index's march back towards five-year highs.

In Louisiana, the wife of a former soldier is scaling back on Facebook posts and considering unfriending old acquaintances, worried an innocuous joke or long-lost associate might one day land her in a government probe. In California, a college student encrypts chats and emails, saying he's not planning anything sinister but shouldn't have to sweat snoopers. And in Canada, a lawyer is rethinking the data products he uses to ensure his clients' privacy.

As the attorney, Chris Bushong, put it: "Who wants to feel like they're being watched?"

News of the U.S. government's secret surveillance programs that targeted phone records but also information transmitted on the Internet has done more than spark a debate about privacy. Some are reviewing and changing their online habits as they reconsider some basic questions about today's interconnected world. Among them: How much should I share and how should I share it?

Some say they want to take preventative measures in case such programs are expanded. Others are looking to send a message ? not just to the U.S. government but to the Internet companies that collect so much personal information.

"We all think that nobody's interested in us, we're all simple folk," said Doan Moran of Alexandria, La. "But you start looking at the numbers and the phone records ... it makes you really hesitate."

Last month former government contractor Edward Snowden leaked documents revealing that the National Security Agency, as part of its anti-terrorism efforts, had collected the phone records of millions of Americans. A second NSA program called PRISM forces major Internet firms to turn over the detailed contents of communications such as emails, video chats, pictures and more.

Moran's husband, an ex-Army man, already was guarded about using social media. Now she is looking through her Facebook "friends" to consider whom to delete, because she can't know what someone in her network might do in the future. Moran said she's uneasy because she feels unclear about what the NSA is keeping and how deep the agency's interests might go.

In Toronto, attorney Bushong let a free trial of Google's business applications expire after learning about PRISM, under which the NSA seized data from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook and AOL. Bushong is moving to San Diego in August to launch a tax planning firm and said he wants to be able to promise confidentiality and respond sufficiently should clients question his firm's data security. He switched to a Canadian Internet service provider for email and is considering installing his own document servers.

"I'd like to be able to say that I've taken all reasonable steps to ensure that they're not giving up any freedoms unnecessarily," he said.

Across the Internet, computer users are talking about changes small and large ? from strengthening passwords and considering encryption to ditching cellphones and using cash over credit cards. The conversations play out daily on Reddit, Twitter and other networks, and have spread to offline life with so-called "Cryptoparty" gatherings in cities including Dallas, Atlanta and Oakland, Calif.

Information technology professional Josh Scott hosts a monthly Cryptoparty in Dallas to show people how to operate online more privately.

"You have to decide how extreme you want to be," Scott said.

Christopher Shoup, a college student from Victorville, Calif., has been encouraging friends to converse on Cryptocat, a private messaging program that promises users they can chat "without revealing messages to a third party." Shoup isn't worried that his own behavior could draw scrutiny, but said the mere idea that the government could retrieve his personal communications "bothers me as an American."

"I don't think I should have to worry," he said.

Cryptocat said it nearly doubled its number of users in two days after Snowden revealed himself as the source of leaks about the NSA's programs. Two search engine companies billed as alternatives to Google, Bing and Yahoo are also reporting significant surges in use.

DuckDuckGo and Ixquick both promise they don't collect data from users or filter results based on previous history. DuckDuckGo went from 1.8 million searches per day to more than 3 million per day the week after the NSA revelations came to light. Ixquick and sister site Startpage have gone from 2.8 million searches per day to more than 4 million.

Gabriel Weinberg, chief executive of DuckDuckGo, said the NSA programs reminded people to consider privacy but that government snooping may the least of an everyday computer user's concerns. DuckDuckGo's website warns of the pitfalls of Internet search engines, including third-party advertisements built around a user's searches or the potential for a hacker or rogue employee to gain access to personal information.

Potential harm is "becoming more tangible over time," said Weinberg, who is posting fewer family photos, dropping a popular cloud service that stores files and checking his settings on devices at home to ensure they are as private as possible.

At Ixquick, more than 45,000 people have asked to be beta testers for a new email service featuring accounts that not even the company can get into without user codes, spokeswoman Katherine Albrecht said. The company will levy a small charge for the accounts, betting that people are willing to pay for privacy. As computer users grow more savvy, they better understand that Internet companies build their businesses around data collection, Albrecht said.

"These companies are not search engines," she said. "They are brilliant market research companies. ... And you are the product."

Representatives for Google, Yahoo and PalTalk, companies named in a classified PowerPoint presentation leaked by Snowden, declined comment. Microsoft, Apple and AOL officials did not return messages. Previously, the companies issued statements emphasizing that they aren't voluntarily handing over user data to the government. They also rejected newspaper reports indicating that PRISM had opened a door for the agency to tap directly into companies' data centers whenever the government pleases.

"Press reports that suggest that Google is providing open-ended access to our users' data are false, period," Google CEO Larry Page said in a blog post.

It's not clear whether big Internet companies have seen changes in how their products are used. An analysis released this month by comScore Inc. said Google sites accounted for two-thirds of Internet searches in June ? about 427 million queries per day.

In Tokyo, American expat Peng Zhong responded to the spying news by swapping everything from his default search engine and web browser to his computer's operating system. Zhong, an interface designer, then built a website to help others switch, too. Called prism-break.org, the site got more than 200,000 hits in less than a week after Zhong announced it on social networks.

Since then, Zhong said he's seen numerous people talking online about their own experiences in changing their computing habits.

"It's a start," he said.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out: Top 8 tips, hints, and cheats for donuts, cash, and XP!

Tips, tricks, and cheats to help you collect donuts, cash, and XP faster in The Simpsons: Tapped Out

Definitive Simpsons: Tapped Out guide: How to get more donuts, more cash, and more XP faster!

Simpsons: Tapped Out can take over your life and replace it with a Homer Simpson and donut filled cartoon replica faster than you can say "D'oh!" But if you're going to spend all your waking - and some sleeping - hours helping rebuild Springfield, we're want to help you do it as fast, as easily, and as cheaply as possible. So, I've collected some of the very best tips, hints, and flat out cheats I could find, and loaded them up here. So, keep reading, and get ready to take your Simpsons: Tapped Out gaming from "haha!" to "woohoo!"

1. Hidden items and bonuses

This is a rather easy one and doesn't require any skill. Tap on Homer so his task list comes up next to him. Now tap on Homer 10 times quickly. Doing this will unlock 10 donuts and a Jebediah Statue.

2. Choosing tasks

When choosing tasks for your characters to perform, it's good to be mindful of how long they take and what the reward is. Typically longer tasks come with a higher dollar and/or donut amount attached to them. It's good to choose these tasks before you're about to put the game down in order to let your characters achieve these while you're away.

If you're actively playing the game and building things out, it's good to assign your characters to perform shorter tasks. The monetary amount may not be as much but you'll get to interact with your character a lot more. Those little tasks can sometimes add up to decent amounts of cash or donuts rather fast too.

3. Collect money and XP in less taps

If you're tired of seeing all the XP and dollar signs floating around the screen but don't want to tap on each individual one, there's an easier way to collect all of it. Simply tap on one stack to expand it and then close or open your task book. After about five to ten seconds you'll see all your XP and money whisk into your account without the need for you to tap on any more of it.

4. Choose your buildings carefully

When it comes to adding on to Springfield, it's good to choose what you'd like to build carefully. Each property has the potential to earn you money and XP but how much?

Commercial spaces such as the Kwik-E-Mart and others have the ability to earn you higher income but it comes at the cost of time. While you can trigger more tasks at once, they'll most likely take longer. These are good ones to have as a steady stream of income. I typically trigger tasks when I can and definitely always have tasks running while I'm away from the game. That way I come back to a nice pile of cash the next time I play.

Residential properties will earn you income tax on a pretty regular basis but it isn't a ton of cash. You can supplement this by checking on the houses and making sure there aren't any other tasks you can perform. For example, at the Flanders you can send Lisa to babysit. These kinds of residential tasks take longer but earn more cash.

5. Level up faster

Items such as trees will earn you XP, which you'll need in order to level up and unlock other items. While these items don't earn you cash or donuts, it's important not to forget about them. Certain characters, buildings, and other items can only be unlocked when you reach a certain level.

In order to level up, you've got to collect XP. Adding trees, landscaping, and other items are cheap ways of earning XP faster.

6. Consult with the Conform-O-Meter

By tapping on the star rating in your left bottom detail view you'll be shown the Conform-O-Meter. There are many different areas that are dictated by star ratings. The higher the star rating you have in each category, the faster you'll rake in bonuses on top of the XP and money that is paid out for each task. For example, planting more trees will cause the tree hugger portion of your conformity score to climb, therefore increasing the bonuses you can collect for performing tasks in that category.

7. Buying donuts vs buying cash

Tapped Out gives you the option to buy donuts and cash via in-app purchase in order to accelerate how fast you can beat and unlock new objectives and items. When it comes to buying cash or buying donuts the better option is normally buying donuts.

The reason I recommend buying donuts over cash is that donuts allow you to finish objectives faster by rushing them. This in turn gives you cash quicker. In essence, you're really accumulating both faster in turn giving you more money to buy items faster and increase your XP by rushing tasks.

8. Your tips and tricks!

If you play Tapped Out regularly, what tips and tricks have you found that either help you accumulate more items or clear objectives faster? Let us know either in the comments or through our forums. There's already a Tapped Out tips and tricks thread going so if you know anything you think other iMore readers and forum browsers would find useful, be sure to add it in!

Living In The Historic Fairhaven District Bellingham Washington

When considering the diverse range of neighborhoods that Bellingham has to offer, the most appeal, and most unique, must surely be none other than citys historic Fairhaven District. Located just south of downtown Bellingham, and neighboring Western Washington University to the northeast, this neighborhood boasts a European elegance that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the area. The beautiful Bellingham Bay and Marine Park are located at its west-most border, boasting beautiful views, perfect for a summer stroll. Every May, this park is the sight of the exciting conclusion of the Bellingham Ski-to Sea Festival. Find a spot along the bay, (show up early, otherwise you might miss out on one of the prime spots!), and cheer on the racers as they kayak through the water. Be sure to take part in the festivities: food, crafts, music, and an all-around exciting atmosphere.

But theres much more to this lovely neighborhood than simply a once-a-year festival. A favorite stop for Fairhaven locals is the Village Books bookstore. With three floors of books, cozy chairs to linger in, and an adorable coffee and sandwich shop on the top floor, its easy to find yourself getting lost for hours. Just next door, with a helpful connected entryway, is Paper Dreams, an eclectic shop filled with unique gifts for friends and family members. Sample some of their daily-made Mount Baker Fudge, or get some to go! Village Books and Paper Dreams, along with a number of other small shops, border on the Village Green, which boasts a seasonal market, and outdoor films during the summer.

Want to sample fine dining in Fairhaven? Youre going to have a lot to choose from. For the elegant diner, a dinner at Flats Tapas Bar is a must. With their small, exotic plates and a wine list of over 100 choices, this restaurant truly personifies the sophistication of the neighborhood. Just up the street, the historic Sycamore Square contains such excellent restaurants as Mambo Italiano, On Rice, and Le Chat Noir. Le Chat Noir, or the Black Cat, is located on the top floor of the square, with a French Cabaret-themed atmosphere that is especially intriguing if you dine there in the evening.

Speaking of evening activities, Fairhaven nightlife is perfect for those who want a calmer, more refined alternative to the hectic atmosphere of downtown Bellingham. The Archer, an Irish Bar located bellow street-level just across from the Village Green, perfectly exemplifies this ambiance. With a full menu, live Irish fiddle music several nights per week, and an excellent assortment of beers on-tap, the Archer is definitely the place to be on a Friday night. Just two blocks away is Skylarks Hidden Caf, a historic hotel-turned restaurant possessing many of the original hotel attributes. With live Jazz music and dim lighting, Skylarks is the perfect place for an intimate date night.

With all this to offer and more, Fairhaven is the place to be for true Bellingham sophistication. With a safe, family-friendly atmosphere, and excellent shopping, dining, and recreational choices, you cant find Fairhaven amenities in any other area.

Reports: At least 8 killed in Paris train crash

By Nancy Ing and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

At least six people are dead and more than 20 are injured after a train crash in the Paris suburb of Bretigny-sur-Orge on Friday afternoon.

Michel Fuzeau, prefect of the Essone region where the crash took place, told reporters at the scene he feared the number of casualties could rise as rescue workers responded on Friday.

"At this time there are six people dead," French President Francois Hollande said at the scene. "There are 22 seriously injured, one who is in critical condition. And then there many lightly injured people who are already being treated."

Hollande added: "I also want to express my solidarity to the families of those hurt. It is going to take a long time to identify all the victims, the investigations have begun, and as soon as it is possible we will contact the families and give out the names, but I understand the apprehension and the pain. My thoughts are with them. "?

The country?s interior minister put the toll higher in the crash?s immediate aftermath, telling The Associated Press that as many as seven people were thought to be dead.

A photograph taken from social media and posted on the website of French newspaper Le Parisien showed a smashed train car alongside the train station platform in Bretigny-sur-Orge, some 12 miles outside the French capital.

At least six people have died after a train crash outside Paris.

?Most of the people who suffered minor injuries have been taken care of,? local politician Michel Pouzol said, according to Reuters. ?We are going to have to empty the carriages completely to see if there are victims or not.?

An official for France's national railway company, SNCF, told the AP that the train was carrying 385 passengers when the train derailed and four cars piled up while traveling from Paris to Limoges at around 5:15 pm local time.

Guillaume Pepy, chairman of the SNCF,?said the derailment occurred at the point of changing tracks. The train was entering at high speed because it was not supposed to stop at that station, he said.

Pepy praised the train conductor, who he said was able to stop the train before it crashed into another one on the same track.?

Most of those injured are believed to have been evacuated, but a further search may reveal more, Pepy told journalists.

Four of the six train cars are severely damaged.?

France's transport minister was heading to the crash scene, the AP reported.

NBC News? Alastair Jamieson and Becky Bratu contributed to this report.

Pinetree Capital Announces Status of Convertible Debenture Debt Covenant

TORONTO, CANADA--(Marketwired - July 12, 2013) - Pinetree Capital Ltd. (TSX:PNP) ("Pinetree") announces that, as at June 30, 2013, it was not in compliance with one of the debt covenants contained in the convertible debenture indenture dated May 17, 2011, as supplemented by the first supplemental indenture dated December 11, 2012, in each case, between the company and Equity Financial Trust Company, as trustee, which govern Pinetree's 8% convertible unsecured subordinated debentures due May 31, 2016 ("Debentures") (TSX:PNP.DB). The debt covenant at issue prohibits the company's debt from exceeding 33% of the total value of its assets, as reflected on its (unaudited) consolidated balance sheet as at the last day of each month. As at June 30, 2013, Pinetree's debt-to-assets ratio was 36%.

Pinetree has attempted to manage its debt-to-assets ratio throughout the year, primarily by retiring in excess of $14 million principal amount of Debentures under normal course issuer bids (representing approximately 19% of the Debentures originally issued), however, the downturn in both commodity prices and the junior resource space generally has eroded the value of the company's investment portfolio.

Pinetree will continue to monitor its debt ratio, which it estimates to currently remain at a similar level to the June figure.

About Pinetree

Pinetree Capital Ltd. ("Pinetree") was incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario and its shares are publicly-traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") under the symbol "PNP". Pinetree is a diversified investment and venture capital firm focused on the small cap market. Pinetree's investments are primarily in the resources sector: Precious Metals, Base Metals, Oil and Gas, Potash, Lithium and Rare Earths, Uranium and Coal. Pinetree's investment approach is to develop a macro view of a sector, build a position consistent with the view by identifying micro-cap opportunities within that sector, and devise an exit strategy designed to maximize our relative return in light of changing fundamentals and opportunities. Pinetree is recognized as a value-added partner in the resource industry.

Android tablet users, what smartphone do you use? graph of japanese statisticsMobile Marketing Data Laboratory recently conducted a survey with a lot of useful data points, looking at tablet device issues.

Demographics

Between the 18th and 20th of June 2013 568 members of the MMD research panel who were also users of both tablets and smartphones completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The ages were between 20 and 59 years old, but no further information was provided.

There?s a lot of great data here that I?ve been hoping to get my hands on for a while. Over 20% of Android tablet users being iPhone owners is not a surprise to me; given that the iPhone is the biggest-selling smartphone in Japan it is statistically quite normal (I think!) that there is such a split. However, I would like to know why iPhone users chose an Android tablet, or did Android tablet users choose the iPhone? At a guess, I would say that price would be the deciding factor, but I wonder how many of those choosing an Android did have a significant investment in iTunes and app purchases? Perhaps next time we can get answers to these questions.
